Russia Plans First Manned Space Mission Since Rocket Failure

PDF Печать E-mail

The first manned mission to the International Space Station since a Russian rocket failed to launch earlier this month may take off on Dec. 3, space agency Roscosmos said on Wednesday. A Russian cosmonaut and U.S. astronaut were forced to abort their mission on Oct. 11 and perform an emergency landing after a launch accident that Roscomos said was caused by a faulty sensor. The accident was the first serious launch problem experienced by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983, when a crew narrowly escaped before a launch pad explosion. Sergei Krikalyov, a senior Roscosmos official, was quoted by state news agency TASS as saying the next manned launch had been planned for mid-December, but that Russia was trying to bring the date forward so that the ISS is not briefly left without a crew. The three-person crew may return home on Dec. 20, he was quoted as saying. “The industry is making significant efforts to move the launch to Dec. 3 so that the station does not switch to autopilot mode, and landing is expected around Dec. 20,” he said.

Russia Will ‘Vigorously Defend’ Rights of Compatriots Abroad, Putin Says

Russia will strongly defend the rights of its compatriots abroad, President Vladimir Putin said at the World Congress of Compatriots in Moscow on Wednesday. Rossotrudnichestvo, the government agency for promoting Russia in the world, estimates that about 30 million Russian compatriots live abroad. According to Putin, Russophobia as well as other forms of “aggressive nationalism” are spreading in countries around the world. “It happens in Ukraine, in the Baltics. In other countries. We know about this,” the president was cited as saying by the state-run RIA Novosti news agency. “History is being rewritten and a battle is being fought against monuments and the Russian language,” he added. Putin vouched to decisively protect the rights and interests of compatriots, using “all existing bilateral and international mechanisms.” The president’s comments came after he signed a decree to ease the process for compatriots to return to Russia and claim citizenship, Interfax reported earlier on Wednesday. Putin estimated that about 800,000 compatriots had moved back to Russia in the past 12 years.

The mood among the average Russian may be souring with inflation eating into their purchasing power, but the country’s richest are world beaters when it comes to making money.
The 10 wealthiest people in Russia have added more to their fortunes year-to-date than any of their counterparts globally, with a 10.8 percent increase, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. They’re followed by U.S. tycoons at 7.5 percent. Britain’s elite billionaires are up 3.4 percent, despite contentious Brexit negotiations and worsening relations with Moscow.

Russia Climbs in Global Competitiveness Index

The Russian economy has climbed two spots in an annual rating of the world’s most competitive economies published by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Russia returned to a growth rate of 1.5 percent in 2017 after two years of decline and is projected to grow a further 1.7 percent this year and 1.8 percent in 2019. The WEF – which runs the annual Davos forum – ranks 140 countries on a scale from 0 to 100 in its annual Global Competitiveness Index. The 98 indicators in the index this year were drawn from international organizations and a survey of company executives; it largely reflected long-term policies such as investing in digital skills.

The 2018 football World Cup boosted the Russian economy by hundreds of billions of rubles, the tournament’s organizers said Monday.
Before the event, international analysts predicted that the summer global tournament held every four years would have limited economic impact in the country. Russia is estimated to have spent $11 billion on hosting the World Cup, according to official reports, while other reports suggested additional costs ran the bill to $14 billion.

Russia’s outspoken culture minister has called the famed Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky the original rapper.
Born 125 years ago, Mayakovsky was famous for satirical depictions of bourgeois life. He gained prominence as a leading avant-garde and Futurist poet in pre-revolutionary Russia and was lauded by Soviet authorities before becoming disillusioned in the new communist state, leading to his suicide in 1930.

No Time to Be Nervous: Russian Cosmonaut Shrugs Off Emergency Landing

Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin shrugged off on Tuesday his emergency landing last week, saying there had been no time to worry as his capsule plunged back to earth.
Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague had to abort their mission on Oct. 11 after the Soyuz rocket supposed to carry them to the International Space Station failed. In an interview with Rossiya-24 television, Ovchinin described the huge G-forces the crew experienced. «Imagine if a reinforced concrete block seven times your weight was placed on your chest», he said.
