Russian Senators Call on Facebook’s Zuckerberg to Testify on Privacy

PDF Печать E-mail

Russian senators have called on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to provide expert testimony on privacy, weeks after the tech giant founder spoke to U.S. and European lawmakers on regulating social networks. The world’s largest social media network has come under fire for a breach that allowed the Cambridge Analytica political consultancy company to exploit 87 million U.S. and European users’ data without their permission. Russia’s media regulator Roskomnadzor has had Facebook in its crosshairs since last year for failing to comply with a 2015 law requiring tech firms to store Russian citizens’ personal data on local servers.

150th Truck Gets Stuck Under St. Petersburg’s «Bridge of Stupidity»

PDF Печать E-mail

Sometimes, believing in yourself is just not enough. This Sunday, yet another truck driver ignored all the warning signs to become the 150th brave soul to get stuck under an infamous low-clearance bridge outside St. Petersburg. The so-called “Bridge of Stupidity,” built on the outskirts of Russia’s second-largest city in 2009, has become an online sensation for the number of accidents its 2-meter height has caused. Fourteen trucks have already gotten stuck underneath the bridge this year, despite a banner overhead warning drivers of low clearance. “What everyone’s been waiting for for so long has finally happened,” the satirical Twitter account devoted to the bridge wrote on Sunday, together with photographs of the Gazel truck wedged under the bridge. Tellingly, the banner above the clearance warns drivers of the Russian-made truck that “Gazels will not pass.” The driver of the commemorative box truck remained upbeat and in a celebratory mood, telling the local news channel Nevskye Novosti that “it can happen to anyone.” A birthday cake was presented to the bridge in honor of the occasion in an online photo on the megapolisonline.ru news portal and a new banner was added to the bridge warning drivers of its now-150 victims. «Already 150 Trucks!»

Russian Art Vandal Arrested, Denies Drinking Vodka

PDF Печать E-mail

A Moscow court has ordered the arrest of a man who attacked a famous painting depicting Ivan the Terrible and his dying son at a museum in the Russian capital last week. Ilya Podporin, 37, allegedly snuck past Tretyakov Gallery security guards minutes before closing time on Friday and struck the canvas with a metal pole, causing extensive damage in three places. He confessed to attacking the painting “because it distorts historical facts” and faces a prison sentence of up to six years. “The court rules to grant the investigation’s motion to place Podporin in pre-trial detention until July 26,” the state-run TASS news agency quoted the judge as saying. Podporin confessed to damaging the painting and took back his initial testimony where he said he attacked the masterpiece under the influence of alcohol, Interfax reported. “I didn’t drink and I don’t drink vodka at all. The video that was disseminated was made after I was pressured,” he was quoted as saying at the hearing. The painting, by the classic Russian painter Ilya Repin, depicts Ivan the Terrible cradling his son, who he had just mortally wounded. It has repeatedly raised the ire of Russian conservatives, who accuse it of distorting history.

Imports of Fake Cheese Ingredient Palm Oil Soar in Russia

PDF Печать E-mail

Russia has ramped up imports of palm oil, which domestic cheesemakers have used as a cheap substitute to replace high-quality European dairy products, in the first months of 2018, according to official statistics. Fake cheese has flooded the Russian market after the Kremlin imposed an embargo on Western food imports in response to international sanctions following Russia’s annexation of Crimea. Up to a quarter of Russian cheese was recognized as fake due to palm oil use. Palm oil imports have climbed by 35.8 percent in January-March 2018 as compared to the same period last year, Russia’s official statistics agency said in a quarterly report Monday. At least one-third of all cheese sold in Russia had been imported prior to the food embargo was imposed in August 2014, the Russian National Dairy Producers Union has estimated. Domestic cheeses have since accounted for up to 80 percent of the market. Russia’s ex-agriculture minister has pledged that manufacturers would be required to list palm oil as an ingredient on packaging by mid-2018, the state-run TASS news agency reported.

Putin Says Will Step Down as President after Term Expires in 2024

PDF Печать E-mail

Vladimir Putin said on Friday he would respect the Russian constitution which bans anyone from serving two consecutive presidential terms, meaning he will step down from his post in 2024 when his current term expires. His remarks, made to reporters at an economic forum in St. Petersburg and broadcast on state TV, are not a surprise and do not necessarily mean he will relinquish power in six years. Putin has stepped down as president once before, in 2008, after serving two back-to-back terms only to return in 2012 after doing a stint as prime minister, a manoeuvre he would be legally entitled to carry out again. «I have always strictly abided by and abide by the constitution of the Russian Federation,» Putin said when asked if and when he would be leaving office. «In the constitution, it’s clearly written that nobody can serve more than two terms in a row ... I intend to abide by this rule.» Putin easily won re-election in March, extending his tenure by six years to 24 — which would make him Moscow’s longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

Spending violations uncovered by a state auditor have reportedly doubled in Russia in the past year, with the defense and space industries accounting for the majority of misspent funds.
The Russian space agency has been the Audit Chamber’s top target for financial violations in annual reports, including the Roscosmos federal space agency and a new spaceport in Russia’s Far East.
Russia’s Audit Chamber found 1.87 trillion rubles ($20 billion) in spending violations in 2017, up from 965.8 billion rubles in 2016, the RBC business portal reported Wednesday.
