First Russian to Referee Champions League Final

PDF Печать E-mail

Former women’s national football team defender Anastasia Pustovoitova will be the first Russian national to referee a Champions League final after the UEFA selected her to officiate the women’s final later this month.
Olympique Lyonnais play FC Barcelona Femenino in Hungary on May 18. No Russian — male or female — has refereed a Champions League final since the annual club competition’s modern-day inception in the early 1990s. Pustovoitova will be flanked by fellow Russian Yekaterina Kurochkina, Romania’s Claudia Iugulescu and Hungary’s Katalin Kulcsár, the UEFA Referees Committee announced on Wednesday.
Pustovoitova, 38, has also been tapped to officiate the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France this summer, the committee said.

Putin Signs Internet Isolation Bill Into Law

PDF Печать E-mail

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed a bill that seeks to establish Russia’s “internet sovereignty” into law.
Deputies first submitted the measures to tighten state control over the internet in December, citing the need to respond to an “aggressive” U.S. national cybersecurity strategy. It has drawn fierce criticism from civil society groups over fears that it would lead Russia to follow China’s example in establishing an isolated internet landscape.

Russian Navy May Have Trained Whale Discovered in Norway, Specialists Say

PDF Печать E-mail

Marine specialists in Norway have said a harnessed whale that was discovered off its coast may have been trained by the Russian Navy as part of a program to use underwater mammals for service operations.
Norwegian media reported Saturday that local fisherman Joar Hesten removed a harness from a beluga whale in northern Norway after the mammal repeatedly approached his boat. The removed harness was reportedly inscribed with the phrase “Equipment of St. Petersburg.”

Over 100 Activists Detained at Russia’s Labor Day Marches

PDF Печать E-mail

More than 120 people have been detained during May Day marches in seven Russian cities on Wednesday.
May 1 marks Labor Day in Russia, where official parades and organized street demonstrations celebrating workers and laborers are held across the country. Traditionally, official May Day celebrations in Russia are seen as a source of pride rather than a chance to raise acute social issues or workers’ problems.  A total of 124 people have been apprehended as of mid-afternoon, 68 of them in St. Petersburg alone, according to a tally by the OVD-Info police-monitoring website.
Elsewhere in Russia, OVD-Info said at least 16 activists were detained in the Far East port city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, 10 in Siberia’s Tomsk and five in Novosibirsk, all of whom have subsequently been released.

PDF Печать E-mail

Russia’s state space agency plans to send “outstanding citizens” to the International Space Station (ISS) at no cost in exchange for their achievements, the agency’s head announced on Thursday.
The Roscosmos space agency plans to send tourists to the ISS in late 2021 under a deal signed with the U.S. tourism firm Space Adventures. Dmitry Rogozin, the head Roscosmos, has vowed to bring tourists to the ISS in less time than a Moscow-Brussels flight after a cargo spacecraft set a record last summer to reach the station.

Calls to Ban Plastic Bags Mount in Russia as Trash Crisis Deepens

PDF Печать E-mail

Russian lawmakers have stepped up calls to ban plastic bags over the past week amid mounting concerns about pollution and Russia’s national waste crisis.
Moscow’s plan to export its waste to surrounding regions has riled Russian citizens in recent months, while nationwide trash reforms threaten to shut down garbage collectors in nine regions. In the European Union, plastic items such as straws, forks and knives as well as cotton buds will be banned by 2021, and Russia’s Leningrad region banned single-use plastics last year.

Russian theater director Kirill Serebrennikov received two prestigious theater awards at a ceremony in Moscow on Tuesday, less than two weeks after his release from house arrest.
The Gogol Center’s artistic director was released on bail on April 8 after spending a year and a half under house arrest on criminal fraud charges that his supporters say were politically motivated.
Serebrennikov was given the Golden Mask Award for best drama director during the awards ceremony at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater for his production of “Little Tragedies” at the Gogol Center.

Russia Completes Delivery of Su-35 Fighter Jets to China for $2.5Bln

PDF Печать E-mail

Russia has completed the delivery of Su-35 combat aircraft to China in defiance of U.S. sanctions, Russia’s military and technical cooperation agency told state media Tuesday.
Russia and China signed a $2.5 billion deal on the delivery of 24 Sukhoi Su-35s in 2015, making it the first foreign buyer of the fourth-generation multirole air superiority fighter. The United States imposed sanctions on the Chinese military last September for buying 10 Su-35s in 2017 and missile systems in 2018 from Russia.
