An American basketball player is set to become the third U.S. citizen to play for the Russian women’s team after accepting Russian citizenship.
Point guard Jamierra Faulkner, 26, joined UMMC Yekaterinburg earlier this month after stints in Poland, Israel and America’s WNBA. Faulkner was naturalized as a Russian citizen by presidential decree shortly before joining the club, following the paths of Epiphanny Prince and Becky Hammon.

Achilles the Cat Named Official Animal Oracle for FIFA World Cup in Russia

Achilles the cat, a resident of Russia’s famous Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, has been chosen to predict the winners and losers of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Achilles will follow up on his role as the official oracle of the Confederation Cup that Russia hosted last year, where he reportedly correctly predicted the outcome of three out of four matches. The blue-eyed oracle made his predictions by choosing between two bowls of food, each marked by the flag of a national team.

“A Fantastic Woman” from Chile walked away with an Oscar at the 90th annual Academy Awards show, beating Russia’s “Loveless.” Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev’s film had been the year’s favorite foreign language movie competing with motion pictures from Chile, Lebanon, Hungary and Sweden.
“From the beginning we had high hopes for our film, which was well received at festivals around the world,” producer Alexander Rodnyansky told The Moscow Times. Movies from 93 countries around the world competed for the top prize. The Russian film’s top competitor, director Fatih Akin’s German entry “In the Fade,” fizzled out in the final days of competition after capturing the Golden Globe.

Russian Bots Unleashed Campaign to Save General Hux, Star Wars Director Says

PDF Печать E-mail

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson reportedly batted off a legion of Russian bots who launched a campaign pleading to save the life of a ruthless military general named General Hux.
The revelation was documented in a behind-the-scenes film about the making of The Last Jedi that screened at the South By Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas on Tuesday. Johnson’s Twitter account flooded with #HuxLive hashtags early in the 2017 feature’s production, the Film School Rejects website reported. “It’s amazing […]There’s a coordinated effort by these Russian accounts. Hundreds of them,” Johnson was cite as saying in the documentary that is slated for wide release this summer. The #HuxLive hashtag has resurfaced in the past 24 hours with users ironically questioning whether their desire to keep General Hux alive meant they were “Russian bots.” The franchise grossed over $16 million in Russia and post-Soviet countries since its mid-December 2017 release. “Why the Russians bots love Hux is clear now — they are way into authoritarian regimes — but at the time, it appears to have been perplexing for Johnson and his collaborators,” the website reported.

Moscow to Deploy 17,000 Cops to ‘Protect Public Order’ During Russian Elections

More than 17,000 police officers will reportedly patrol polling stations in Moscow this Sunday to ensure security at the presidential elections.
President Vladimir Putin is expected to win an overwhelming majority and secure a fourth term in office in the March 18 vote. Earlier this year, a Major General from the National Guard promised a tough response to possible election disturbances. “More than 17,000 police officers will be deployed to protect public order and the security of citizens,” the Interior Ministry’s Moscow office told Interfax on Tuesday. The law enforcement officers will be joined by National Guard troops, private security company employees, self-defense militias and grassroots groups, it added.

Russian Embassy Proposes Twitter as Communication Channel with U.S. State Department

PDF Печать E-mail

The Russian embassy in Washington has proposed using Twitter as a channel for diplomatic correspondence with the State Department after a breakdown in communication this week.
The initiative follows Russia’s unsuccessful attempts to set up a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Ethiopia this week. The U.S. government repeatedly denied receiving a formal request for the meeting, while Russian diplomats insisted that a request had been sent. The Russian embassy’s press secretary, Nick Lakhonin, issued the proposal in a tweet on Friday directed at State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert. The Russian diplomat called Twitter a “more reliable & quicker communication channel” and said his embassy was willing to send diplomatic correspondence through direct messages on the social network, provided the State Department followed the embassy’s account. “Let our ministers meet!” he added. At a State Department briefing on Tuesday, Heather Nauert denied that Russia had requested a meeting between Lavrov and Tillerson, prompting Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to accuse Nauert of “distorting reality.” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed on Friday that the two top diplomats would not be meeting in Ethiopia this week, the state-run TASS news agency reported.

Moscow’s Car Sharing Market Becomes Biggest in Europe, Mayor Says

PDF Печать E-mail

Moscow now has the largest number of vehicles available for car sharing in Europe, the mayor’s office announced on Thursday.
Car sharing was introduced in Moscow in 2015 as an effort to combat the city’s notorious traffic congestion. Last month, Moscow was named the second worst city in the world for traffic jams after Los Angeles. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a tweet on Friday that Moscow now has the largest number of automobiles available for carsharing in Europe. “The cars are used over 25,000 times per day,” he said in the tweet. “We plan to have the total number of cars available reach 10-15 thousand by the end of the year,” he added. Moscow has also expanded the area of paid parking spots significantly over the past years, making it increasingly difficult and expensive for Muscovites to drive their own cars in the center of the city.

Men Arrested After Stealing $1M at Fake Moscow Currency Exchange

PDF Печать E-mail

Police in Moscow have arrested two fake currency exchange operators who made off with $1 million stolen from an unsuspecting customer.
The scammers reportedly rented an office space that previously housed a bank cash register and refitted it as a currency exchange booth without a license. The victim and his friends sought to exchange the $1 million into rubles from the unlicensed operator in central Moscow, Russia’s Interior Ministry said in a statement on its website Wednesday.  “The operator, having received the bag with money, closed the cash register window supposedly to count the received bills and exited through an emergency exit,” the ministry said. “The perpetrators’ accomplices had recommended this currency exchange booth as having the most favorable rate,” it added. The two suspects have been arrested on charges of large-scale fraud, a penalty that carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
